Talk: She-hackers, CCCamp
Chaos Communication Camp 2011
In 2002, Ghosh et al released a study which found that in F/LOSS coder/hacker communities, only 1.5% of members were female. This talk for the famous Chaos Communication Congress’s camp in 2011 explored some the challenges of my ethnographic research into gender and identity concerns amongst hackers under 30 conducted at UCL, and then asked participants of Chaos Communication Camp to share their own experiences. It ended up being a really interesting conversation amongst hackers and technologists of all kinds, many of whom had either experienced overt discrimination in their communities or wanted to know how to avoid perpetrating such environments for those newer to hacker subcultures.
